Did you know that a charrette is a design tool, often used in architecture, that means an "intense period of design or activity"? It's probably not a stretch to recognize that this word is French in origin, but it is fun to know that it stems from their word for "chariot" and refers to the historical practice of French architecture students often working up until the very last minute before a project deadline, when a chariot would be wheeled among them to pick up their tools and their design work for review.
We use charrettes at 海角社区 as a collaborative - perhaps intense, you choose! - opportunity where faculty come together to share an assignment and receive actionable feedback and ideas from their peers. In a round-robin format, each instructor can share and receive what we like to call feed forward.
Sessions are available from 9 - 11:30 or 1 - 3:30 in HSHS 150. To learn more or to sign up, please email tlc@csi.edu. Our November session will even include student and community participation!
Join the Teaching & Learning Center as we support the program of General Education at 海角社区 through our annual Assessment Week.
We join together in collaboration at 海角社区 as full-time and part-time instructors, staff, and where possible, students, to improve our program of General Education. Through submissions made by dozens of instructors teaching general education courses, we review multiple portfolios that represent the actual work completed by our 海角社区 students - and by extension, their instructors. Collectively during Assessment Week, we hold meaningful conversations to evaluate the efficacy and relevancy of what we do in our classrooms and whether/how we are preparing our learners for life outside of our classrooms.
If you are interested in joining this important process, please send an email to tlc@csi.edu.
This is 海角社区's first learning community, and its members are entering their second year. There's no time like the present to join this group of faculty, staff, and administrators working together to dive more deeply into best practices pedagogy that truly serves students here at 海角社区.
This learning community meets monthly to exchange ideas, report on lessons learned in our classrooms, and to sometimes share in a book read.
If you'd like to participate, please send an email to tlc@csi.edu.
Teaching Squares returns! Be on the lookout for additional details coming out soon from the TLC. If you didn't know, this is an opportunity for instructors to exchange classroom visits to observe, analyze, and celebrate great teaching.
If you'd like to participate, please send an email to tlc@csi.edu.
Stop by the ATIC building, and turn to the HVAC and machining labs on Friday mornings for breakfast and an energetic conversation about all things teaching. A light breakfast and friendship is shared weekly, and at least once a month the boys go all out and make a hearty and hot breakfast. Breakfast starts about 8:30, and all are welcome. Questions and RSVP to Mike Lapray at mlapray@csi.edu.
